The Church and Monastery of Santa Caterina is located within the historic core of Locarno, originally marking its eastern boundary. The monastic complex is characterized by a gradual aggregation of buildings from different periods, organically clustered over time. In a similar spirit, the New Museum is conceived as an ensemble of three large stone-like volumes, nestled within each other, cleanly cut and subtly differing in color and finish. The voids between these precise forms and the irregular edges of the site allow for the continuity and legibility of the ancient perimeter wall. These interstitial spaces also help define the orientation of the museum’s interior and enable natural lighting in the workshop areas.
